Changes to HSE Approved First Aid at Work Courses

First Aid at Work Regulations - On the 1st of October 2009 the Regulations relating to First Aid at Work are changing.

The current 4 day First Aid at Work (FAW) course is being replaced by a shorter 3 day FAW course. Those who successfully complete the course will still be issued with the HSE Approved FAW certificate, valid for 3 years.

First Aid at Work Re-qualification - to maintain their qualification First Aiders will still be required to undertake the existing HSE Approved 2 day First Aid at Work Refresher course prior to the expiry of their FAW certificate.

Emergency First Aid in the Workplace - The HSE are also introducing the new 1 day Emergency First Aid in the Workplace (FAWE) course. This course which formally replaces the current un-approved 1 day Appointed person / Emergency First Aid course, run by most training providers is designed to allow employers to provide basic First Aid in low risk environments or to provide additional First Aid cover where necessary.

Annual Skills Update - although not a mandatory requirement under the new Regulations, the HSE strongly recommends all employers to provide annual refresher training to those holding FAW or FAWE certificates. The HSE recommend that such sessions should be of at least 3 hours duration although more effective 1 day courses are available.
